Second bank robbed in Bluffton, South Carolina

Just three days after one Bluffton, South Carolina bank was robbed on Halloween, a second bank was hit Monday and FBI agents are looking for a Georgia man who may have robbed at least two others.

Corey Christie, 24, is wanted by the FBI for the Wednesday robbery of a Wachovia Bank in Atlanta. He is also the top suspect in the Friday robbery of South Carolina Bank & Trust in Bluffton and allegedly robbed Bank of America in Sheridan Park on Monday, said FBI Agent Dave Calore.

The search for Christie comes just three months after he was released from a federal prison in Georgia for robbing a Savannah bank in 1999.

Arrest warrants have been issued for him in the Atlanta robbery and for violation of his federal probation.

"We believe he is the bank robber from Friday and believe he hit this bank today," said Calore as he stood in front of the Bank of America on Monday. "He's been positively identified."

Meanwhile, detectives dusted the front door for fingerprints and deputies waved bank customers away. Yellow tape blocked the nearest parking lot and those who got close enough to read the sign on the bank's entrance found that the bank was temporarily closed.

The robbery happened at 1:01 p.m. when a lone white man entered, went to a teller and demanded money. He took an undisclosed amount of cash and fled. Investigators couldn't determine which way he ran or if he had a vehicle nearby, Calore said.

He was reportedly wearing a button-up shirt over a T-shirt and tan baseball cap.

Christie may be driving a relative's 1994 black Jeep Cherokee with Georgia plate 9063ANR, Calore said. He is a Savannah native but it is unclear what connection, if any, he may have to the South Carolina Lowcountry or why he might have committed three robberies in six days.

"That's the way they operate" sometimes, Calore said. "You just don't know what's going on."

An FBI "wanted" flier says Christie is a known crack cocaine user and advises caution. It lists an alias of "Utah Christi."

The Wachovia Bank robbery on Peachtree Street happened Wednesday when a man entered the bank and handed the teller a note, said Special Agent Joe Parris of the FBI in Atlanta.

As in the Bluffton, South Carolina robberies, the robber made no attempt to conceal his face and his image was captured on surveillance tapes.

A reward has been offered for information leading to Christie's arrest and conviction in connection with the Atlanta bank robbery.

Monday's robbery came just three days after a white man entered South Carolina Bank & Trust and demanded money at about 9:24 a.m. Friday. The banks robbed Friday and Monday are only a few miles apart.

He was reportedly wearing a blue striped short-sleeve shirt over a white T-shirt and jeans and had short-cropped dirty blonde hair. Despite a search of the area, no arrest was made.

Anyone with information about the robberies or Christie's whereabouts is asked to call Calore at 836-2922.
